Preventative Dental Care
Because we are committed to preventitive dentistry, Dr. Barney recommends our patients to maintain routine cleaning, x-rays and exams every six months. Often, dental problems can begin very small but quickly can worsen and become much more serious. With regular office visits, we can catch these signs early, making treatment more managable.

Children are ALWAYS welcome to become patients! As a general dentistry office, we love being able to have children as patients! We strive in making the dental experience, one that is positive and educational for kids. Unless parents are aware of noticeable problems (decay, plaque, unusual staining), we recommend that children be seen for their first appointment between the ages of 3 and 4 years of age.

Once the child turns the age of 6, and their six-year molars come into their mouths, we recommend that sealants are place. It is best if sealants are applied soon after their teeth have erupted, before they have a chance to decay. This procedure is also recommended as the second set of molars come into the mouth, around the age of 12.
Restorative Dental Care
Restorative dentistry encompasses a wide variety of treatments, that can improve and restore your teeth, to regain the well being of your smile!. Restorative dentistry can be as simple as filling a small cavity, or may be more advanced in some serious cases, just as crowns, bridges, root canals etc. Below are many of the services that Dr. Barney's Hawaiian Smiles offers.
Composite Restoration (Fillings): Composite resin fillings are tooth colored. A filling is needed when tooth decay has caused a hole (cavity) to form on a tooth surface. If the filling is not taken care of, the cavity will get worse and lead to more severe problems, such as bone loss. Please note, that Dr. Barney does not use amalgam (or silver material) for fillings.
Periodontal Maintenance: This type of maintenance is needed when the surrounding tissues (gums) of the teeth have become inflamed, creating pockets which allow bacteria to build. A deep cleaning is done to remove plaque and calculus from the surface.
Root Canal Therapy (RCT): A root canal is needed for the treatment of disease or injury to the pulp connective tissue that contains blood vessels and nerve tissue in hopes to repair and save the tooth that has become badly decayed or infected. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

Crowns: A dental crown (or cap) is needed to protect a weak tooth from breaking, to restore an already broken tooth, to cover and support a tooth with a large filling when their isnt a lot of tooth left, to hold a dental bridge in place, or to cover a dental implant. Dr. Barney may discuss a few different options for the material used to make your crown. With the use of new technology, the CEREC 3D software, Dr. Barney is able to design and build your crown in our office - making this procedure ONLY ONE APPOINTMENT! Typically a temporary is placed, while an impression is sent to a lab, where the crown is made. Two weeks later the permanent is placed.

Bridges: A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap these two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth or a false tooth/teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics and can be made up of gold, porcelain or a combination of these materials. Bridges can restore your smile, restore your ability to properly chew and speak, distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth and prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.

Extractions: A tooth can be extracted for a variety of reasons, but most commonly when decay or abscess tooth (a tooth that has a pocket of puss in the tissue) is so severe that no other treatment will cure the infection. In some cases, we may need to refer our patient to an oral surgeon, due to the complexity of the tooth and root structure.
